Curriculum Overview

Curriculum is defined as the expectations for what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of a grade level or course. Curriculum is often organized by units with themes or topics as well as timelines or a scope and sequence to help both student and teacher keep a productive pace.  A good curriculum will be aligned to state and/or national standards and encourage learners to go beyond those baseline expectations to explore the content or skills more deeply.  Curriculum serves as the plan for instruction within our classrooms but does not dictate how an educator is to approach the teaching and learning.

In the Hampstead School District we embrace a variety of instructional practices that will vary based on our learners grade, developmental and skill level as well as the content area.  One of these instructional practices is known as Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  UDL is a framework that is known to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn.  We are incredibly proud of our District's UDL team of teachers who have been working closely with CAST.  To learn more about UDL in Hampstead see their presentation or click below to watch an excerpt of the November 9, 2021 school board meeting when they presented.

To the side are the links to the Hampstead School District Preschool - 8th grade Language Arts and Mathematics units which are aligned with the New Hampshire College and Career Ready standards. These units include grade level expectations for what students are expected to know and be able to do, learning activities and resources used by teachers to support the development of the standards, as well as the methods teachers will use to evaluate students' achievement of these standards. Our philosophies regarding the teaching of language arts and mathematics are included as well.
